Rock On! Creating a Rock Garden (Without Breaking My Back)

Okay, so, I’ve always been obsessed with rock gardens. They’re so cool and zen and low-maintenance. But I was also intimidated. I mean, moving all those rocks? No thanks. But I decided to face my fears and create my own rock garden. And guess what? It wasn’t as hard as I thought!

First, I gathered my rocks. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on fancy landscaping rocks, so I just used rocks that I found in my yard and around my neighborhood. Free rocks! Score!

Next, I prepped the area. I cleared away any grass or weeds and leveled the ground. Then, I laid down a layer of landscape fabric to prevent weeds from growing up through the rocks.

Now came the fun part: arranging the rocks! I tried to create a natural-looking landscape, with different sizes and shapes of rocks. I also left some space between the rocks for plants.

I planted some drought-tolerant plants that are well-suited for rock gardens. Things like succulents, sedums, and alpine plants. They’re all super low-maintenance and can handle the dry conditions.

I added some gravel and mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. And that was it! My rock garden was complete.

It’s not perfect, but it’s mine. And it adds a cool, unique element to my backyard. Plus, it’s super low-maintenance. I barely have to water it, and I never have to mow it. Win-win!

So, if you’re looking for a low-maintenance, visually interesting landscaping option, consider creating a rock garden. It’s easier than you think, and it can add a lot of character to your yard.
