Container Gardening: Small Space, Big Impact

Okay, so, I don’t have a ton of space in my backyard. But I still wanted to grow some flowers and veggies. Enter: container gardening! It’s the perfect solution for small spaces, balconies, or anyone who just wants to add a little bit of green to their life.

First, I had to find some cute pots. I hit up my local garden center and found a bunch of colorful ceramic pots. I also snagged a few terracotta pots from a thrift store and painted them myself. DIY points!

Next, I filled the pots with potting mix. Not garden soil! Potting mix is lighter and drains better, which is important for container plants.

Then came the fun part: planting! I planted a mix of flowers, herbs, and veggies. I went with a “thriller, filler, spiller” approach. The “thriller” is the focal point of the container (like a tall flower or a small shrub). The “filler” adds some bulk and texture (like leafy greens or smaller flowers). And the “spiller” cascades over the edge of the pot (like trailing vines or herbs).

I put my containers in a sunny spot and watered them regularly. I also fertilized them every few weeks to keep them happy and healthy.

And now, my patio is bursting with color and life! I have fresh herbs for cooking, beautiful flowers to admire, and even a few tomatoes and peppers growing.

Container gardening is so easy and rewarding. It’s a great way to add some green to your life, even if you don’t have a lot of space. Plus, it’s super customizable. You can grow whatever you want, in whatever pots you want. The possibilities are endless!
